BLOOD AND SAND Following
his triumph in The Sheik. Valentino was relegated to a series of cheap
roles with heavy sexual overtones to perpetuate his "hot Latin" Image.
He had intended Blood and Sand to be the role that would breakthrough
those stereotypes or at least lead to more serious role and signed on
for a big-budget, epic production. Following a series of lawsuits and
recriminations the film was finally made on Paramount's backlot with actual
bullfighting footage intercut with staged arena sequences. The story is
that of a poor boy's struggles to become one of Spain's greatest bullfighters. Directed
by Fred Niblo. Cast; Rudolph Valentino, Lila Lee & Nita Naldi. 1922
90m Silent film with added music score.

THE EAGLE The Next-to-last Film
by Rudy Valentino. He is a lieutenant in the Army of the Czarina. After
the aging monarch propositions him and he rejects her he deserts his military
position and returns to his village. There, the injustices brought about
by the royal Family and their henchmen move him to action; he becomes
a "robin hood" type character. Great adventure romance. 1925 74m Silent Film
with original, re-release film score. |
